The road to Savanette, a small rural town in Haiti, was seriously bumpy. It was bumpy like I had never experienced on the roads stateside. Don’t get me wrong, it was an unpaved dirt road in rural Haiti, but bumpy! We rolled by houses with children outside, some older and some younger, greeting us with a wave or smile. We rolled by women washing clothes in an above ground spring that ran in front of their home. We rolled by boys playing soccer. We rolled by catching a glimpse of the people of Haiti, God’s people. We arrived at the church in Savanette, we carried our things inside, set up our table. Our small group of three ladies were coming to teach a new project to the 17 women of the Hatian Bead Project in Savanette. They were already there, watching us as we came in, waiting for us. My friend, Nancy, led a devotion time that moved passed language barriers and touched the hearts of the ladies there. God had led her to use her personal testimony to speak into these ladies, to let them know we have the same childhood problems, the same struggles, the same journey, but God meets us and He redeems. These ladies related as they watched and listened and then they blessed me beyond anything I could have asked for. Let me be honest, I struggle in church worship, my voice is, let’s just say…no bueno, ask my husband he will agree! When we worship in church, I love to stand next to him as he sings loudly, I can sing in a normal voice… his drowning mine out. At least, I think so…if that is not the case then I am making a joyful noise for not only God, but those next to me too! Thankfully, God gave me my voice and loves me right thru the tone deafness. But back to the blessing. Our mutual link in Haiti, Dorina, asked them if they would sing for us. These ladies, didn’t even hesitate, they just sang…together…all of them…beautifully…loudly…proudly…in a manner of true worship to the God that we all served. I closed my eyes, tears streamed down my face as I truly felt as though I was in the presence of angles singing praise to the Lord Almighty. A cherished gift unwrapped in Haiti.
We continued working with the ladies, teaching them how to make new products, working alongside them. It was a blessed time of sharing in community. As we drove back to Pignon, a song was playing in the car. At first, it was just in the background. But, I soon started to listen more carefully, it was a different rendition of an old 80’s song, In Your Eyes. As it played I was struck by the newness of the meaning in the words. We had just spent this time with these ladies in this little church and here were the words to this song ringing true…

In your eyes
The light the heat
In your eyes
I am complete
In your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
In your eyes
The resolution of all the fruitless searches
In your eyes
I see the light and the heat
In your eyes
Oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
The heat I see in your eyes
As I journey thru life, the road may sometimes be bumpy…even Haiti bumpy, but I am not alone. The God I serve knows my heart, He knit me together. He is my savior, redeemer, lover of my soul. He meets me wherever I am, at home or in Haiti. He transcends cultures, languages and economic status. I am truly grateful that He paved the way for me to have this experience.
